Hanoi’s history is closely linked to the ups and downs of Vietnamese history, once the capital of most feudal dynasties. In the 3rd century BC, An Duong Vuong chose Co Loa, now in Dong Anh District as the capital of Au Lac. This event marked the development of this region into the political and social center of the Vietnamese people.
After 1000 years of Northern domination, Co Loa was once again the capital of an independent country when Ngo Quyen defeated the Southern Han army in 938. In 1010, King Ly Thai To relocated the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long, inspired by a vision of a dragon ascending from the new imperial citadel.

The name "Thang Long" symbolizes the aspiration for the capital and the nation to soar to new heights. Indeed, Vietnam experienced a golden age following this move. Dai Viet flourished under the Ly, Tran, Le, and Mac dynasties for over seven centuries after. The nation became a regional powerhouse and successfully repelled powerful invaders.
From the 18th-century Tay Son Dynasty, the capital moved to Phu Xuan (Hue) yet Thang Long remained the capital of the North. In 1831, King Minh Mang reorganized the administration and established Hanoi Province. Hanoi means "inside the river," alluding to Hanoi's geography between the Nhi and Day rivers.

Since the reunification in 1975, Hanoi has continued to be the capital of a unified Vietnam. The city has developed dramatically in the last three decades with modern and massive construction projects. The total length of roads in the inner city is now nearly 400 kilometers. If Hanoi was previously known for 36 Old Quarter streets, today the number has increased to almost 500.
The inner city is the heart of the city, housing the administrative, economic, and cultural hubs. Life in the inner city is often bustling and lively with a high population density. Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, and Dong Da districts have many famous historical and cultural relics. Other inner-city districts are rapidly developing modern infrastructure and constantly expanding urban areas.

Hanoi's expansion in 2008 incorporated Ha Tay Province and parts of neighboring provinces. Suburbs have spacious living spaces and a slower pace of life. Many places are still villages and have a simple rural cultural identity. But therefore, there are many beautiful natural landscapes for city excursions.
