History of Hanoi Old Quarter

During the Ly and Tran dynasties, the residential and commercial district that is today known as the Old Quarter was situated east of the Imperial Citadel at Thang Long and along the Red River. Scholar Nguyen Trai stated that throughout the Le dynasty, some regions were each specialized in a specific trade. Then a protective wall with multiple gates encircled it.
The region had a number of lakes and wetlands under the Le dynasty, with Thai Cuc lake being the largest. Hoan Kiem Lake and the Red River were connected to these lakes and the To Lich River. These lakes and rivers were cut off from one another at the end of the 1800s.

The densest urban region of the city was created during the Ly and Tran dynasties when a large number of people from the nearby plains moved to the city and resided in what is now the Old Quarter. A second wave of Chinese immigration arrived during the Le dynasty period, primarily as traders, giving rise to multiple Chinese neighborhoods.
A portion of the region was restored during the French occupation of Vietnam. During this time, a large number of French and Indians settled there for business purposes. Dong Xuan Market was built by demolishing two smaller markets. In addition, a tramway was built throughout the quarter.
