Located in Son Tay Town, about 50 kilometers west of Hanoi, Duong Lam Ancient Village is over 1,200 years old. For generations, it has been famous as the birthplace of two great national heroes, Phung Hung and Ngo Quyen who played an important role in the history of Vietnam.
In the 8th century, Phung Hung started a successful rebellion against the tyrannical Tang Dynasty and established an autonomous rule in northern Vietnam. Ngo Quyen is remembered for his final victory over the Southern Han army in 938 that put an end to centuries of domination by the Chinese and gave birth to the independence of Vietnam.

The historical importance of the village is not limited to the connection with these two figures. Duong Lam is one of the oldest villages in Vietnam and was officially recognized as a national relic in 2005.
The best time to visit Duong Lam Ancient Village is in spring from March to April and autumn from September to November, because during this period, the weather is mild, and scenery is most vibrant. The most iconic landmark in Duong Lam, Mia Pagoda is a spiritual and architectural beauty. Built first in the 15th century, this pagoda houses over 280 Buddha statues inside it, all intricately carved and uniquely expressive. Set amidst ancient trees, it is a very peaceful setting and thus perfect for contemplation and appreciation of the culture.

Right at the village's center, the Mong Phu Communal House has been conventionally one of the traditional meeting and festival places for villagers. Being typical of Vietnamese wooden house style, the 17th century edifice sports detailed carvings of mythological subjects along with scenes of history. Much attached to the house is significant due to its strategic placement at the entrance to the village.

A stroll through Duong Lam's narrow alleys reveals hundreds of laterite made traditional houses a reddish brown sedimentary rock. Some of them date back over 400 years and offer insight into daily village life and their enduring craftsmanship. Many of the homeowners are happy to welcome visitors and give an opportunity to learn about their heritage.

It is a temple dedicated to King Phung Hung and is a place of worship and history. It contains ancient altars, statues, and artifacts related to the king's services for independence and is serene, hence very good for history lovers.

The Ngo Quyen Mausoleum, a tribute to the leader who laid the first stone in 938 of Vietnam's independence, is sited not far from the village. It contains his modest tomb and a stone stele testifying to his great feats. A place to see for those interested in early Vietnamese history.

Getting to Duong Lam Ancient Village is quite easy and has a number of options to suit your travel preferences. From Hanoi, one can get Bus 70A or 71 from My Dinh Bus Station, which runs to Son Tay Town. From there, you can take a motorbike taxi or local taxi for about 4 km and normally takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
By car or motorbike, the most flexible options, take Highway 32 northeast through some of the most beautiful countryside in Vietnam, a journey of about 1.5 hours. It's also possible to take a guided tour from Hanoi, which will include transportation, at least one meal, and a knowledgeable guide to help point out the various sights.

Wear comfortable shoes: the village is best toured by foot and so wear comfortable shoes to handle the unevenness of cobblestone pathways.
Try the local cuisine: do try the traditional che lam or sweet rice cake and goi mia or sugarcane salad. These can be enjoyed from the small restaurants down to the shops of the local vendors themselves.
