Introduction

As one of the national museums and the first in the system of Military Museums, the Vietnam Military History currently stores and displays more than 15 thousand documents and artifacts, including many unique collections and 4 National Treasures.

The museum is open from 8 – 11:30 AM, and 1 – 4:30 PM, except Mondays and Fridays will be closed.

Admission Fees

The Vietnam Military History Museum is officially open for welcome and free admission until the end of December 2024. 

Structure

The museum building stands out with a front yard and a Victory Tower, along with a museum block consisting of 4 floors and 1 ground floor, with a construction area of 23,198m2. The total floor area of the main building is 64,640m2, the total height is 35,8m.

The highlight in front of the museum is the Victory Tower with a height of 45m, symbolizing the milestone in 1945, President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence that gave birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The top of the tower is beveled 60 degrees, forming a 5-pointed star at the top. The golden star symbolizes the soul of the nation and the five points of the star represent the five main classes in Vietnamese society—intellectuals, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, and soldiers.

Exhibition space inside

In the space on both sides of the building's wings is a symbol of the desire for peace with branches, green sprouts, and pigeon wings flying from the wreckage.

Stepping through the main hall is the display of the MiG-21 "Silver Swallow" No. 4324. What impressed and surprised visitors was the huge MiG-21 hung on cables attached to the roof, creating the feeling of being on a sortie to protect the sky of the country.

Combined with a large LED screen to introduce the beauty of Vietnam and the contents of the history, culture, and traditions of building and preserving the country of the Vietnamese people.

The exhibition space inside the museum on the 1st floor is divided into 6 themes.

Theme 1: The beginning of establishing and defending the country; 

Theme 2: Defending Independence from 939 to 1858; 

Theme 3: Anti-French colonialism, national independence from 1858 to 1945; 

Theme 4: Resistance against French colonial aggression, 1945 - 1954; 

Theme 5: The resistance war against the United States from 1954 to 1975; 

Theme 6: Building the country from 1976 to today.

The new museum is built with a modern design, applying many new exhibition methods, combined with 3D mapping technology; information lookup screen equipment, photo documentary media; Automatic audioguide narration, and QR code to look up information on artifacts, images and more than 60 video clips introducing campaigns, battles, and historical figures bring visitors a completely new experience.

On the left, the weapons and equipment of the Vietnamese Army and people used in the resistance war against French and American aggression and used in training and readiness to fight in the period of building and defending the country are displayed.

Typical are: 85mm cannon; 57mm anti-aircraft guns; PT67 tank number 555; MiG 17 aircraft No.2047; SU22 aircraft…

On the right side of the Museum, the weapons and equipment used by the French and American armies in the war of aggression against Vietnam are displayed, typically: artillery, infantry fighting vehicles, and tanks. 

Especially, there is the M-107 self-propelled artillery with a caliber of 175mm which is known as the "King of the Battlefield" and many types of aircraft of the US military left behind after the war such as A37, F5E, CH47, C130 aircraft and dozens of bombs, the US military used in the Vietnam War.
