Weather in January

January is considered one of the best months to visit Laos. During this time of the year, the temperature is neither too high nor too low, and the weather is typically dry and cool throughout the country.

The temperature may change a bit among different regions, but in general, the average daytime temperature varies between 20°C and nearly 30 °C, and it falls around 7°C to 10°C at night. Northern Laos is often cooler than central and southern Laos. Rainfall is minimal, providing suitable conditions for traveling and outside activities such as trekking, sightseeing, hot-air ballooning, or exploring natural sites.

Places to visit

Xiangkhouang

Xiangkhouang is a province situated on Xiangkhouang plateau in the Westnorthern Laos. It is 1,200 meters above sea level so it may be quite cold during January. Xieng Khouang includes seven districts: Paek, Phaxay, Phoukoot, Kham, Nong Hét, Khoun, and Mokmai.

January is the perfect time to visit Xiangkhouang if travelers want to participate in Bun Kin Chiang (also known as Bun Kin Chieng or Nu Pejao) - a traditional festival celebrated in the H’mong community from December until after New Year. Travelers will have opportunities to attend many interesting activities and try traditional food made from fresh wild materials.

This place ranks among the most beautiful cities in Southeast Asia, outstanding with shady tree-lined roads and a good blend of traditional and European-colonized constructions. Luang Prabang charms visitors with its peaceful beauty and identified cultural value.

To gain more knowledge about Buddhism, the main religion in Laos, travelers are suggested to attend the Boun Pha Vet festival - a significant Buddhist event celebrated in January. In this festival, locals gather at temples to make offerings and listen to sermons. The highlight of Boun Pha Vet is the candlelit procession, where people carry candles and offerings through the streets of Luang Prabang.

Vang Vieng

Around 150km far away from Vientiane, Vang Vieng is a small town nestled among lush forests and the peaceful Nam Song River. It is one of the most attractive destinations in Laos, renowned for its fresh atmosphere and pristine beauty with limestone cliffs, splendid waterfall, and unique geologic-formed caves.

One of the top attractions is Tham Chang Cave. It is within walking distance of Vang Vieng town and very easy to reach. It takes about 20 minutes to walk through the whole cave complex.

The cave is fairly well-lit and set up with stairs, keeping visitors safe and making it easier to explore every corner inside the cave. Travelers can observe gorgeous stalactites and stalagmites as well as interesting colors on the walls, which are the result of the effect of minerals in the water dripping through the cave.

Tham Xang, or Elephant Cave is also an interesting place. Hence its name, the cave is famous for its unique formed limestones resembling elephants, creating a mystical and inspiring atmosphere. Besides special rock formations, tourists can observe the golden Buddha statue and a grand golden bell made from an American bomb since the fierce war between Vietnam and America (1964-1973).

Vientiane

Vientiane is the largest city and the capital of Laos, situated on a plain just northeast of the Mekong River. The place offers a rich blend of history, spirituality, and culture. Mild and comfortable weather in January enables tourists to take walking tours and explore the city’s key places.

Patuxai (Victory Gate) (or Arc de Triomphe of Vientiane) is a must-visit destination. This monument was constructed between 1957 and 1968 to commemorate Laos’s independence from France. Patuxai shows Laotian architecture styles with intricate carvings and decorations and offers panoramic views of Vientiane from its top.

When visiting local temples, tourists may be surprised by the scene of a serene procession of saffron-robed monks walking through the streets to collect offerings from devout locals. This activity is Almsgiving, or Tak Bat, a traditional Buddhist ritual in Laos, in which people offer food to monks as a form of merit-making.
