History of Xieng Khouang province

During the 20th century, this land became one of the fiercest battlefields of the Vietnam War. Millions of tons of bombs were dropped on this land, causing serious environmental and human consequences.

After World War II, the French continued to use Xieng Khouang town, now Muang Khoun town, as the provincial capital. Plain of Jars

The Plain of Jars Heritage Site is an important destination and attracts many tourists to explore and experience the most in the Xieng Khouang area. With more than 2,000 stone jars of all shapes and sizes, dating from around 500 BC to 500 AD. The stone jars are scattered in many places in Xieng Khouang.

The jars are on average 1 - 2 meters high, some are up to 3.5m high, weighing tens of tons. Currently, the origin of these jars is still an unexplained curiosity.

Tham Piew Cave

Tham Piew Cave is a historical site associated with an unforgettable tragedy during the Second Indochina War in 1969 in Laos. Tham Piew Cave is located in Muang Kham District, Xieng Khouang Province, northeastern Laos. 

The cave is located on a rugged mountainside, about 80 meters high, with a spacious interior that stretches for hundreds of meters. It commemorates a painful and dark past that leaves a deep sense of loss for the Lao people to this day.

Wat Phia Wat

Wat Phia Wat is believed to have been built in 1322 but was successively destroyed by the French and Americans between 1953 and 1966. The Buddha statue here may not be pretty, with a missing eye, a scar on the right cheek and lip. However, it is a testament to the resilience and ability of the people to rise up after almost total destruction. Perhaps that is why the statue is revered by many people, who often come to worship.
