Originating from the 1,800m high mountains of Yan Shan (Yunnan, China), the river flows in the northeast through rugged wild mountains and forests, pouring into Dong Van Town to enter Vietnam. The river continues to flow downstream through Tu San Canyon, when it reaches Meo Vac, it splits into two branches and flows into Cao Bang Province, finally merging with the water of the Gam River at Na Mat junction.
Legend has it that, when the mountain was still intact, the water flowing down from the mountain was stagnant a lot. On the one side, the water is rising more and more, and on the other side, because there is no river, the soil is always cracked, arid, and the grass is bare.

On a stormy night, The God of Lightning struck the mountain with his sword, splitting it in half. Water gushed forth, reviving the land and turning the once-barren mountainside lush and green. The flowing water became the Nho Que River, dividing Ma Pi Leng Pass from the Sam Pun mountain range.

During the dry season, October to April, the weather is pleasant, with cool temperatures and clear skies, perfect for enjoying the stunning scenery. You’ll also catch the golden rice terraces in full bloom, creating a breathtaking backdrop. Meanwhile, spring (March to May) brings blooming flowers and vibrant greenery, adding to the river’s charm. Avoid the rainy season (August - September) as the water may turn murky, and landslides can make traveling difficult.
With an altitude of up to 1,200m, this pass has a steep slope and special bends, creating good conditions for you to enjoy the panoramic view of the mountains and hills and the poetic green river. From the top of Ma Pi Leng Pass, a place known as “the clouds under your feet, the sky touches your forehead” you will have a perfect view of the majesty of the mountains and the Nho Que River.
