Legend has it that in ancient times, there was a talented Hmong man who played dan moi (lip lute) beautifully. A celestial being named Hoa Dao, extraordinarily beautiful, happened to hear the sound of his dan moi and descended to the mortal world in search of the musician. The two fell in love, married, and had a son.

When Ngoc Hoang, a heavenly deity, discovered that Hoa Dao had run away to the mortal world and married a human, he became extremely angry and sent someone to bring her back. Despite Hoa Dao's tears and pleas, Ngoc Hoang remained adamant. She, out of love for her husband, struggled to raise their child on her own, and since she couldn't provide breast milk, she left her two breast blossoms in the earthly realm for her child to feed on.
