History

According to many legends, before founding the Nguyen Dynasty, Emperor Gia Long often traveled by boat along the rivers of the Mekong Delta. One evening, as he passed through the Hau River into Can Tho, he heard the melodious sounds of singing, poetry recitation, and music drifting from afar. Impressed by the beauty of the moment, he named the riverbank "Cam Thi Giang" (the River of Music and Poetry). From then on, the wharf became famous.

During the French colonial period, the wharf was bustling with boats engaged in trade. As commerce flourished, the wharf was gradually expanded and renovated, eventually becoming a popular tourist attraction.

In 1957, it was officially named Ninh Kieu Wharf to commemorate a victory of Emperor Le Loi. Today, the area around the wharf has been renamed Ninh Kieu District. Le Loi Street, which runs along the riverbank, has been developed into a walking street and night market.
