The pass is 20 kilometers long at an elevation of 500 meters, serving as the natural boundary between Hue and Da Nang. Beyond being a vital transportation route, it also holds significant historical, geographical, and cultural value. Join Asia King Travel to witness the breathtaking landscapes of this iconic pass!
Hai Van Pass was once the border between Dai Viet and Champa in the 14th century. A century later, the Ho Dynasty launched a campaign against Champa, gaining full control over the pass. During the French colonial period, the French built a railway line that ran through the mountains. Based on that railway route, the Hai Van Road Tunnel was constructed and officially opened in 2005. It is the longest road tunnel in Southeast Asia, stretching over 6 kilometers.

Although the road tunnel was built to enhance safety, many travelers still prefer taking this scenic route for the breathtaking views. On a clear day, drivers can admire some of the most stunning landmarks of both Hue and Da Nang, including Lang Co Bay, Son Tra Peninsula, Da Nang City, Cham Islands, and golden sandy beaches stretching along the crystal-clear waters.
Hai Van Pass is located on the Bach Ma mountain range, 80 kilometers south of Hue and 20 kilometers north of Da Nang. It is also a part of National Highway 1A, which runs along Vietnam. From either city, you can reach the pass by following the national highway.

Another cool fact is that Hai Van Pass and the Bach Ma mountain range serve as a natural divide between the distinct climates of Vietnam’s two regions. The north experiences all four seasons, while the south remains warm throughout the year.
March to September is probably the best time to visit. Dry and sunny offer clear views of the breathtaking coastline. During this period, the roads are safer, and you can fully enjoy the winding curves and stunning landscapes without worrying about heavy rain or fog. If you prefer a more dramatic experience, visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon allows you to witness the mist rolling over the mountains.

It can only be described as a masterpiece of nature atop Hai Van Pass: one side adorned with golden sands embracing the boundless blue sea, the other wrapped in mist swirling around towering mountains.

The closer you get to the summit, the more overwhelmed you’ll be by the breathtaking scenery. The sounds of the forest, the crisp chill of the wind and the fog brushing against your skin. All create an unforgettable experience. The landscape transforms throughout the day, as the sunlight paints the surroundings in ever-changing hues.
Although it’s not on the Hai Van road itself, the railway station is a must-visit scenic spot. This station is part of the railway line built by the French. From the foot of the pass in Hue, follow a 4 km road from a yellow guard post to reach the station.
Once there, you’ll be greeted by a charming, vintage-style railway station. The peaceful atmosphere contrasts with the hustle and bustle of major train stations, yet it never feels desolate. Nearby, an arched bridge spans a mountain stream, resembling a gateway to the sky. The sight of the bridge and flowing water is reminiscent of railway bridges in Europe or the U.S.

Hai Van Gate is a feudal-era defensive outpost located on the border between two provinces. Recently, the site has been restored and transformed into a scenic stop where visitors can enjoy the view and explore historical photographs of the pass.

Just a short distance past the gate, you'll face a U-shaped turn that's almost a full 180-degree hairpin curve. While the turn is sharp, it's wide enough to navigate smoothly if you have steady control of your vehicle. Travelers often stop here for a moment to capture the one-of-one curve and the stunning mountain scenery surrounding it.

On the way down from the summit towards the south, you'll come across a lone pine tree growing near the roadside. It's called the "Lonely Pine" because it's the only one standing so close to the road, with no other pines around. The vast ocean stretching behind it further emphasizes its solitude. Nearby, there's a charmingly decorated café where you can take a break, admire the tree, and soak in the breathtaking views of the sea and sky.

Near the end of the descent towards Da Nang, there’s a café combined with a small sheep farm. The café has beautifully arranged photo spots, so you can easily snap Instagram-worthy pictures. You can also buy food and hand-feed the sheep yourself. Keep in mind that the farm is located on a hill rather than right by the roadside. If you're driving a car, it's best to park at the foot of the hill and walk up, as the path is quite steep.
