Hue Gifted School was founded on October 23, 1896 by King Thanh Thai's decree. The school is one of the three oldest schools in Vietnam. At first, the school was called Phap Tu Quoc Hoc Duong as a high school focusing on teaching French, alongside the National language and classical Chinese.

Over the years, the school has changed into several names including National School (1896 - 1936), Khai Dinh High School (1936 - 1954), and Ngo Dinh Diem High School (1955 - 1956). In 1956, on the 60th anniversary, the school returned to original name, National School.

Hue National School, together with Quy Nhon National and Vinh National School, was one of the three Quoc Hoc schools established by France. These schools were created to train civil henchmen for Southern Court Protectorate Government, a puppet government run by the French.
