Itinerary
Depart Phnom Penh around 7 a.m. for the 7-8 hour journey to Mondulkiri province. Travel begins with a ferry across the Mekong River, followed by a scenic drive through the countryside. Stop at the local Psar Svai Tom market, where tourists are rare. Continue on a smooth road through fertile agricultural land, with opportunities to visit rubber and pepper plantations.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading into Mondulkiri, passing Seima Protected Forest, home to around 150 wild elephants. Upon arrival in Sen Monorom, check into your accommodation.
In the late afternoon, visit Sen Monorom Waterfall for a relaxing break. The waterfall is about 8m high and offers a great spot for bathing or resting after the long drive.
Overnight in Sen Monorom.
Distance: 375 km, approx. 7.5 hours.
After breakfast, visit Pulung village to learn about the Phnong community's culture and way of life. See their homes and hear about their connection to forests and elephants.
Next, enjoy an 8 km trek to a beautiful waterfall. Afterward, drive to Bou Sra Waterfall, Cambodia's largest two-tier waterfall. Have a picnic lunch with views of the falls, and if you’re feeling adventurous, take a short hike to the upper level.
In the afternoon, visit a coffee plantation for a fresh cup and a walk around the fields. Finish the day at a hilltop viewpoint with a panoramic view of the "Sea Forest" and watch the sunset.
Return to your accommodation in the evening.
Trekking distance: 8 km.
After breakfast, head to the Elephant Valley Project (ELIE), a 30-minute drive from Sen Monorom. ELIE is an ecotourism project focused on elephant care, rehabilitation, and conservation, where no elephant riding is allowed.
Upon arrival, learn about the elephants, many of whom were rescued from mistreatment, and observe them as they graze, bathe, and roam freely in the valley. Spend the day observing and learning about the elephants' stories, their rehabilitation, and how they are cared for in a natural environment.
The project offers a peaceful and educational experience as you walk through the valley, along streams, and up small hills.
(Note: The project is open Mon-Fri, closed on weekends when elephants are at a different site)
Return to Sen Monorom in the evening.
After an early breakfast, depart for Phnom Penh (or your next destination). First, visit Putang village, a Phnong village where you can learn more about traditions and see the large jars used for brewing rice wine. A local Phnong guide will assist with your visit.
The first 200 km of the trip follows the same route as Day 1. Stop at a rubber factory near Chub to learn about the production process. Then, continue to Kampong Cham for lunch.
After lunch, drive towards Phnom Penh, with an optional visit to Skuon market, famous for its local delicacy.
Arrive in Phnom Penh in the late afternoon.
