Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnamese Culture

The origin of Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnam is believed to originate from Chinese culture. According to ancient legend, this occasion began during Tang Dynasty, during the reign of King Due Ton, under Van Minh era. That year, on the night of full moon of August, the wind was cool, the moon was full and beautiful, while playing outside the city, the king met a fairy who descended to earth in the guise of an old man with white hair as snow.

The fairy used magic to create a rainbow, one end touching the moon, the other touching the ground, and the king climbed the rainbow to the moon and strolled in the Quang palace. Returning to the mortal world, the king missed the poetic moon palace, so he established Mid-Autumn Festival. Later on, this festival was later introduced to Vietnam.

In addition, the people have the custom of worshiping ancestors during the day and hanging lanterns in the evening to display offerings and enjoy the moon.
