History of Bac Lieu Province

The name "Bac Lieu", read in Chinese, with a Chaozhou accent, is Po Leo, which means poor neighborhood and low-class professions like fishing and seafaring. Po is pronounced in Sino-Vietnam as "Bac" and Leo is pronounced as "Lieu".

In 1680, Mac Cuu, as a Ming Dynasty ambassador in China, came to Mang Kham Region to gather several Vietnamese and Chinese migrants residing in Mang Kham, Phu Quoc, Rach Gia, Long Xuyen) to establish the first villages in this land.

In 1708, Mac Cuu paid tribute  Mang Kham Region to Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu. Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu named this area Ha Tien Town. Mac Cuu was appointed the General of Ha Tien, with the title Cuu Ngoc Hau. Mac Cuu established a garrison in Phuong Thanh, the population became more and more crowded.

In 1757, Lord Nguyen Phuc Khoat annexed Ba Thac land, established Tran Giang (Can Tho Province), Tran Di (Soc Trang, Bac Lieu provinces). The entire southern land belonged to Lord Nguyen. In 1867, the French colonialists occupied six provinces of Nam Ky. At the beginning of the French colonial period, Ba Xuyen prefecture was changed to Ba Xuyen Inspectorate.

On May 16, 1911, the Governor-General of Indochina decided to upgrade the administrative agency of Ca Mau to Ca Mau District under Bac Lieu Province. After 1975, the South was completely liberated, the province merged with Ca Mau Province to establish Minh Hai Province.

Bac Lieu was the provincial capital of Minh Hai Province from 1977 to 1984. In 1985 the provincial capital was moved to Ca Mau. On January 1, 1997, the province was re-established, the city became a province standalone.
