History

Ba Ria - Vung Tau has gone through many stages of development from the initial exploration period to the present. The name "Ba Ria" originated from a woman who reclaimed land in this area. Vung Tau and Con Dao have undergone many administrative changes, from being districts of Gia Dinh Prefecture to becoming province in 1991.

In 1698, Gia Dinh Prefecture was established with Phuoc Long District including the land that is now Ba Ria - Vung Tau. During the French colonial period, Ba Ria and Vung Tau changed their administrative structure many times, from Town to City. After 1975, many changes continued to take place, until Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province was officially established in 1991.
