History of Sukau

For centuries, indigenous tribes of Sabah have called Sukau their home and benefited highly from its rich resources. Wildlife Spotting Along the Menanggul River

Menanggul is a small tributary of the Kinabatangan, hosting a high concentration of species. Besides, Sukau is considered one of the finest points for close observation during morning or evening cruising.

Everything from the rare Bornean orangutans to the very rare storm stork calls this dense vegetation along the bank home. It is also a great sighting of peculiar proboscis monkeys, natives of Borneo, and viewed slung on branches along the river.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to come for a visit to Sukau is from March to October because it is the dry season in Sabah, this means that the water levels within the rivers are higher. It is much easier to find wild life along the riverbanks since the water levels are lower. Generally, the weather is warm and less humid, making it an ideal place to enjoy river safaris and jungle treks.

Yet even the rainy season has its own charm, which typically falls between November and February. During this period, the beauty of the lush vegetation of the rainforest is awakened, and though the river levels may swell to make other areas less accessible, the flow of water generates a beautiful sight. Moreover, the rainy season is good for seeing migratory birds.
