History of Ngang Pass

In history, Ngang Pass was the site of numerous battles between Dai Viet and Champa. In 1558, Lord Nguyen Hoang, heeding the prophecy of Scholar Nguyen Binh Khiem. He crossed the Hoanh Son mountain range to govern Thuan Hoa (Quang Binh to Quang Nam), expanding the territory to the South.

In the 14th year of Minh Mang's reign (1833), the king ordered the construction of Hoanh Son Quan on the peak of Ngang Pass, along with many other structures, as a symbol of the gateway to the capital.

During the Vietnam War, Ngang Pass was a key target for fierce attacks by the South Vietnamese government. Young volunteers and engineering corps of North Vietnam tenaciously held their ground day and night to keep the transportation routes open.

Location of Ngang Pass and How to get there
