Recognized as World’s Heritage Site, Angkor Complex was the largest and also the most important archaeologist sites in Southeast Asia. Stretching over 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Complex contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. The Complex comprises numerous monuments in Khmer architecture which is naturalistic, complicated and full of symbols.
We continue heading to the former capital Angkor Thom (Bayon, Terrace of the Elephants) - the longest and the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Lying beside Tonle Sap Lake, it was constructed by the king Khmer Jayavarman VII in late 12th century in Bayon architecture and Ta Prohm which is nearly disappeared in jungle and seems to be abandoned with many ruins and surrounded tropical forests. It was a monastery and a Mahayanist Buddhism School, constructed by the king Khmer Jayavarman VII in late 12th century and early 13th century in Bayon architecture style. Lunch served in local restaurant. In the afternoon, we cycle to Banteay Kdey and explore this massive complex before we head back to Siem Reap for refreshing ourselves and dinner. Overnight in Siem Reap.
After breakfast at the hotel we depart for Banteay Srey, 25km far away from the Angkor area. It is the smallest but magnificent temple of the Complex, dedicated to the Hindu God - Shiva. Banteay Srei was completely built in the 14th century with red sandstones, which made it a masterpiece of artistic sculpture.
On the way to Siem Reap we pass Banteay Samre, a miniature Angkor Wat, which is relatively unexplored. The road to these temples passes pretty countryside. From there we cycle through the Angkor Complex back to Siem Reap. Along the way you will be able to enjoy the stunning views of some of the most impressive temples of the Angkor Complex. Overnight in Siem Reap.
Today we depart for a cycling towards Rolous group. The oldest Angkor temple complex around Angkor and dates back to the 8th and 9th century. The group consist of the three main temples are Lolei, Preah Ko and Bakong. Afterwards we continue to Beng Mealea Temple which is located 70km away from Seam Reap by road. Constructed in a distinctly Angkor Wat style by King Suyavarman II in the early 12th century, Beng Melea might be considered as a prototype for Angkor Wat. It quitely collapsed after war, but can be seen as monumental as Angkor Wat. This also is the burial ground of King Suryavarman II. Upon our arrival we set up our camp and enjoy dinner at the campsite. Overnight camping
Day 5: Beng Mealea – Phnom Kulen – Siem Reap (B, L, D) (Cycling distance: 30km)
After breakfast at the campsite we explore Beng Mealea. The temple is covered by jungle and less touristic. It’s a real treat for anyone who loves nature, religion and history. We continue our short ride but beautiful through lots of rice fields and local villages to the foot of the Phnom Kulen Hills. Located 30km northwards from Angkor Wat, Phnom Kulen mountain range is considered as a significantly religious mountain of Hindus and Buddhists coming to this mountain in pilgrimage. It is said that it was at Phnom Kulen that the King Jaravarman II proclaimed Cambodia’s independence from Java – the birthplace of ancient Khmer Empire. The main attraction is the waterfall on the top of Kulen Mountain, which provides water for Seam Reap and dominates the skyline of all flat plains surrounds.
From here we continue our riding towards Siem Reap. The last 20km will lead us pass several temples and mainly countryside. Overnight in Siem Reap.
Today we set off for the morning ride towards the “Grand Circuit” of Angkor Wat. This road will lead pass temples such as East Mebon, Ta Som, Neak Pean and Preah Khan temple.
