An awesome way to explore a little known but critically important rare bird sanctuary. We leave Siem Reap at 7am and head South West passing quickly from urban Siem Reap to rural countryside. An amazing elevated drive above numerous rice paddies, buffalo and rare and endangered water birds. Our expert bird guide will be with you all the way and be able to show you unique viewing areas along the way. After approx. 1 hour drive in our air conditioned minivan on arrival at Chreav Bird Sanctuary we will have our traditional longtail boats to take you onto the lake proper, where we will be able to get up close and personal to the nesting areas and breeding grounds of these rare water birds. After roughly 2 hours on the water we will be taken back to the docking area for a picnic lunch and drinks, then we will be transported back to Siem Reap and your hotel by our air conditioned minivan, arrival at approx. 1pm. This tour is best taken in the dry season and replaces our tour to Prek Toal dependent on water levels. So from March through August, Chreav is the best area to visit for rare bird species. Some of the rare bird species encountered on this tour may include the Spot Billed Pelican, the Black Headed Ibis, the Greater Adjutant, the Lesser Adjutant, the Asian Openbill, the Black Necked Stork, the Painted Stork, the Oriental Darter, the Masked Finfoot and the Grey Headed Fish Eagle. CONSERVATION ISSUES: Collection of eggs and chicks at the nest remain the single most threat to the continued survival of these water birds on the Tonle Sap lake. Cutting of the forest areas for firewood is also a big problem, specially the cutting down of large tree’s is adversely affecting availability of nesting sites for large water birds. Damming of the Mekong up stream may also affect the fishing and water birds.
