The climate in Cambodia - The best time to visit

In Cambodia, the climate is tropical, and stays warm all year long. It is governed by the monsoon winds, so that this country has two main seasons in a year. From mid-May to early October, the strong winds of the southwestern monsoon bring heavy rain and cause high humidity. It is important to note that three-quarters of annual rainfall occurs during the months of the southwest monsoon. From early November to mid-March, the lighter and drier winds from the northeast monsoon bring variable clouds. It rains infrequently, and the humidity is lower. The time between these 2 seasons is transient.

The highest temperatures throughout the year, ranging from around 28°C in January (the coldest month), to around 38/39 ° C in April.

When to travel to Cambodia?

Most travelers visit Cambodia from November to March. This is an excellent time to visit the coast, although Angkor is usually bakingly hot. 

But if you prefer to dodge the crowds and go when prices are lower, the period from May to early October isn’t too bad. Visiting Cambodia during the rainy season (roughly June–Oct) can present certain practical challenges, but it is also a fascinating time to see the country as it transforms into a waterlogged expanse of tropical green under the daily monsoon deluges (fortunately, the rain falls mainly in the afternoon; mornings are generally dry). Getting around (particularly in September and October) isn’t always easy: dirt roads turn to mud and flooding is commonplace. Not surprising that it’s also the quietest time for tourism (even Angkor is relatively quiet) and the countryside is at its lushest. 

For swimming, the best time is from March to May.

What to bring to Cambodia?

As previously mentioned, Cambodia has a tropical climate, which means that the weather is hot and humid throughout the year. Opt instead for natural fiber clothing, comfortable shoes and clothes. From December to March, we can add a sweatshirt for the evening, and in the rainy season, a light raincoat or an umbrella.
