Nestled in the heart of the Ninh Binh Province, Van Long Nature Reserve is an oasis of tranquility and biodiversity, also referred to as "the bay without waves." It covers almost 3,000 hectares and represents the largest wetland nature reserve in northern Vietnam, with a perfect combination of limestone karsts, lush vegetation, and serene waterways. For the birdwatcher, March and April are particularly rewarding months as migratory birds descend in droves to the wetlands. Alternatively, from May to June is the lotus blooming season when the reserve puts on a picture-postcard display of pink and green hues.
Avoid the peak of the rainy season, from July to October, as heavy rains make boat tours less enjoyable. However, the lush greenery at this time does provide a unique and vibrant experience for nature lovers.

Van Long Nature Reserve is located in Ninh Binh Province, about 90 km south of Ha Noi. It is pretty easy to get there by various means of transport. A private car or taxi will take about two hours from Ha Noi along the Ha Noi–Ninh Binh Expressway. For cheaper options, buses and trains are available from Hanoi to the city of Ninh Binh, from where one can take a short taxi or motorbike ride to the reserve. From Ninh Binh City, it takes about 30 minutes by car or motorbike. The countryside is very nice, with beautiful views. For those who enjoy cycling, the trip to Van Long allows for a leisurely bike ride through the countryside.
