History of Sipadan Island

Sipadan Island's intriguing history stretches back thousands of years, its formation owing to rather unique geological processes. The island is the only oceanic island in Malaysia, the product of millennia of growth by living corals on top of an extinct volcanic cone. The late Jacques Cousteau, the legendary oceanographer, immortalized Sipadan in the diving world with his statement, "I have seen other places like Sipadan, 45 years ago, but now no more. Now we have found an untouched piece of art."

In 2004, in an effort to protect its fragile ecosystem, the Malaysian government ordered all resorts to be closed on the island. Nowadays, strict conservation measures-including a permit system limiting the number of daily visitors-mean Sipadan remains a vibrant haven for marine life.

Attractions

Barracuda Point

One of the most famous dive sites in Sipadan, Barracuda Point is aptly named, with one of its most unforgettable scenes being thousands of barracudas creating a tornado-like vortex. Many divers have seen this natural phenomenon, along with sightings of gray reef sharks, turtles, and large schools of jackfish.

Fast-moving currents make Barracuda Point an adrenalin charged dive, it requires a good dose of caution and experience from divers to navigate waters successfully.

The Drop Off

One of the most dramatic underwater features in Sipadan is the Drop Off. Just a few meters away from the shoreline, the bottom literally falls away straight to over 600 meters, forming this incredible wall dive.

The encounter with marine life will range from colorful nudibranchs and fans to large pelagics. Its shear walls are painted in vibrant corals and covered in countless reef fish-the must-see dive site for every adventurer.

Turtle Cavern

Known for its haunting beauty, Turtle Cavern is an underwater limestone cave in which several skeletons of turtles were found. The caverns are a maze-like system that requires skilled diving and proper guidance.

In the haunting interior, divers are able to see fossilized remains of turtles and gain knowledge about the mystery of how these majestic creatures ended up inside. While the caverns offer a sobering glimpse into nature's cycle, the dive experience remains captivating.
