History of Selangor

The history and trade that developed in Southeast Asia are closely interlinked in Selangor. The state, lying just across the Straits of Malacca, has enjoyed historical importance as both a commercial center and as a source of extraction of tin in the 19th century. Indeed, the growth of the tin mining industry attracted waves of Chinese and Indian immigrants, whose influence can still be felt in culture and food today.

During the late 19th century, Selangor experienced a lot of disputes between the local Malay rulers and an intervention by the British colonial government to impose order. Under the British administration, its capital, Kuala Lumpur, rapidly rose to be Selangor's economic and political importance in Malaysia. Presently, it is one of the most developed states in the country, with its economy ranging from manufacturing, services, and tourism.

Best time to visit

Selangor has a tropical climate with the temperature high nearly all year round. The state is, however, better visited during the dry season that starts from May to September of the year. It is relatively cool with less rainfall at this time, making it a good time for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

The monsoon period in Selangor is characterized by heavy rains with thunderstorms that start from November to March. While this may not be the best time to explore the outdoors, such a season would do just fine for those travelers who would be more interested in indoor activities like shopping and visiting cultural attractions.
