The province’s origins date back to a mosaic of indigenous communities, including the Jarai, Kreung, Tampuan, and Brao. Later, Ratanakiri was on the outskirts of the mighty Khmer Empire and witnessed the rise and fall of cultural and commercial development.
In the 19th century, French colonists established rubber plantations and administrative structures, changing the traditional way of life of the Ratanakiri people and beginning a period of transition.
Ratanakiri was officially established in 1959. The indigenous villages in the beautiful landscape have retained their traditions, with their ancient customs continuing to play an important role in a rapidly changing world.

Found in the far north-east of Cambodia, bordering both Laos and Vietnam, Ratanakiri Province is a region of towering mountains, lush tropical forests and traditional lifestyles led by Cambodia’s large indigenous population here.
Although the government has invested in road development and is focusing on tourism, the roads are still quite poor and bumpy in many places. Given that these are the most often used modes of transportation in the province, you can reach here by vehicle, motorcycle, or tuk-tuk.
