History of Putrajaya

History-wise, Putrajaya dates back to the early 1990s, when the Malaysian government was looking for a solution to the overcrowding and congestion of Kuala Lumpur. The dream was then to offer a newly built administrative capital which could take off some of the pressures from its rapidly expanding metropolis.

It gets its name from the first Malaysian Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra. Intended to be modern, innovative, and sustainable, its construction began in 1995. In 1999, it received a formal transfer of most administrative functions from Kuala Lumpur by the government.

Attractions

Putra Mosque (Masjid Putra)

The Putra Mosque could be regarded as the most iconic building within the city of Putrajaya. The bold pink-domed structure stands forth as the main mosque for the city, whose architecture is beautifully rendered with influences from the Malay and Middle Eastern styles, as evidenced by its towering minaret and its intricately carved details.

It was constructed overlooking the serene Putrajaya Lake and can accommodate 15,000 worshippers. One is allowed to take a tour around the mosque outside the praying hours and, it is at its dramatic best when shades of pink burst under the evening sky.

This place is also the location of the office of the prime minister and one of the identifiable features in the city. In fact, the building itself is a mixture of Islamic, European, and Malay architectures that reflect Malaysia's varied heritage.

It cannot be entered from within, but outside this building is truly a sight to see, especially when lit up at night. Thus, this structure remains a favorite place many people tend to visit for taking pictures of this marvelous landmark.
