Introduction

Phetchaburi is a town in central Thailand, the capital of Phetchaburi Province. The town is located about 160 km south of the capital city Bangkok, at the northern end of the Thai peninsula.

The Phetchaburi River flows through the center of the town. The area is mainly flat, except for a hill on the outskirts of the town (known as Khao Wang). The royal palace named Phra Nakhon Khiri is one of the temples (wat) located on the top of Khao Wang hill. The hill and town have been the site of an annual festival, known as the Phra Nakhon Khiri Fair. The fair lasts for eight days in early February and includes a sound and light show and classical Thai dance performances.

History of Phetchaburi

Phetchaburi has a long history with many significant events. Phetchaburi was an ancient fortress, dating back to the 8th century of the Mon people. Later, the Khmer Empire occupied the fortress, which can still be seen today through the prangs (Thai-style Buddhist temple spires reminiscent of Khmer temple towers, commonly found in the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods) of the Wat Kamphaeng Laeng temple.

In 1860, King Mongkut built a palace near Phetchaburi town, commonly referred to as Khao Wang, but officially named Phra Nakhon Khiri. Alongside the palace, the king constructed an observatory tower for astronomical observation. The adjacent hill is the location of the royal temple Wat Phra Kaeo.

Today, Phetchaburi has become a popular tourist destination in Thailand, thanks to attractions such as the Phra Nakhon Khiri palace, temples, and beautiful beaches.
