It is located in the district of Inanam, about an estimated half an hour's drive from Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah. The name "Kokol" is said to be derived from the Kadazandusun word for a type of forest tree that once thrived in the area. History has it that Kokol Hill had always been quiet and not so explored. But, due to its natural beauty and because it is easily accessible, it has become one of the hottest spots for locals and tourists alike.

The Kokol Eco Farm is of greater interest to those looking for sustainable farming, with a vast array of organic farming styles, at an altitude way up on the hill, various fruits, vegetables, and herbs are grown here. There are guided farm tours offered in this farm, educating the visitors on eco-friendly farm techniques, and the chance for one to buy fresh farm produce. It is also a very good farm for taking a nature walk in the greenery and thus a haven for nature lovers.

Kokol Hill is a haven for those who love hiking and going outdoors. Several well-maintained hiking trails make their way through the dense forest of this hill, offering routes with various degrees of difficulty and time. The trails take visitors through tropical rainforests where they can be delighted by the sights and sounds of Sabah's rich biodiversity. The area is very interesting for birdwatchers, as it contains different endemic and migratory species of birds. On treks, there are viewpoints that, while tiring, make them very rewarding for any landscape around them.

The dry season starts from March to October of the year. The climate is usually sunny during these months though slight rains can be experienced. The best months to go sightseeing, hiking or photography would be June to September, actually popular since it is during the school holidays.
However, this place can be visited all over the year, though from November to February, it is a bit slippery and not so accessible along some of the hiking trails. The beautiful views are also obscured during this foggy weather in the rainy season, so it is not the best time for people who want to clearly see a vista.

To get there, take the main road from Kota Kinabalu towards Inanam. From Inanam, take the road leading up to Kokol Hill. The road leading to the hill is well tarred but quite steep, and therefore it is recommended to drive a car with a good engine capacity, especially if you plan on visiting during or after the rainy season. For those not wanting to drive themselves, there are also taxis and ride hailing services such as Grab.
