The Khoo Kongsi is one of the largest and most prestigious clan houses in Malaysia, serving as an emblem of unity for the clansmen and a reflection of their social status. By the early 19th century, Penang had grown into a prosperous trading center which attracted many Chinese immigrants coming to seek their economic fortune.
The Khoo family was one of the richest and most powerful clans, its clan house or "kongsi" served as the communal focal point where the clan could assemble, worship their ancestors, and provide support to other members of their clan.

The construction of the Khoo Kongsi complex began in 1851 and was completed in 1906, it reflected a traditional Southern Fujian architecture style with intricate designs, murals, and sculptures.
The Leong San Tong, or "Dragon Mountain Hall," is the main ancestral hall within the Khoo Kongsi complex. It is the heart of the clan house and serves as a place to honor and worship the Khoo ancestors. This hall boasts intricate carvings, wooden sculptures, and gold leaf adornments.
Once inside, the fabulous altar, dedicated to the clan's deities and ancestors, along with the beautiful collection of ancestral tablets, immediately catches one's attention. Each tablet represented a generation of the Khoo clan, and therefore the hall was also a repository of family history, a holy place for commemorating their memory.

It is an open courtyard, surrounded by the main building of ancestors and smaller ones on each side. The courtyard served collective activities, ceremonies, festivals, or events. A classic traditional Chinese opera stage is located near the yard and is considered one of the most well-preserved ones in Malaysia.
It served as a hotbed for performing arts-there were usually plays and performances of operas during festivals and celebrations. The architecture of the courtyard, together with the stage, forms a magnificent backdrop showcasing traditional Southern Chinese architecture and allows visitors to peek into the communal life of the Khoo clan.
