If you can pull yourself away from Khao Lak's enticing dunes, the little village of Takua Pa is a worthwhile adventure. Takua Pa is not without its attractions, with some wonderful ancient buildings, an excellent Sunday market, and a picturesque riverbank. It is also home to the 'Little Amazon,' where leisurely kayak cruises along the Klong Sang Ne canal provide opportunities to see a variety of animals.

From November to February, something amazing occurs on calm stretches of beach in the Khao Lak area: sea turtles come ashore under the moonlight to lay their eggs. Visit the Phang Nga Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Centre to learn more about this, including the opportunity to release a turtle into the sea.

Khao Lak is an excellent location for exploring the nearby diving destinations, including the Similan and Surin Islands. The balmy tropical seas of the Similan and Surin Islands are stunning both above and below the waves, teeming with aquatic life and providing unforgettable experiences as you swim with sea turtles for companionship.

The main tourist season runs from December to February, when temperatures are somewhat colder and weather is ideal for outdoor activities. The rainy season, which lasts from May to October, brings greater rainfall and rougher waves, which might limit outdoor activities and island trips, but it also makes the terrain lush and reduces hotel rates.

How to get to Khao Lak

If driving, you may get to Khao Lak from Phuket by taking Highway 402 north and then continue on Highway 4, which takes 1.5 to 2 hours. It takes 2.5 to 3 hours from Krabi to go northwest on Highway 4. 

Buses and minivans are also accessible from Phuket and Krabi, with travel times of around 2.5 to 3 hours and 3 to 4 hours, respectively. Private transportation from these places provide a more comfortable and convenient alternative.
