Buddha Mountain, also known as Khao Chi Chan, was elevated from a marble quarry to a sacred cultural site in 1996 in honor of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's fiftieth anniversary of ascendancy. 

The Supreme Patriarch served as the project's inspiration, and the Thai government provided backing. Using cutting-edge laser technology, a 130-meter-tall picture of the Buddha was inlaid with gold leaf.
