During the Nguyen Dynasty, the Central Highlands - Dak Lak area was called Bon Man, indirectly managed by the Nguyen Dynasty. In 1867, the French colonialists organized expeditions to penetrate deep into the interior of the Central Highlands; in 1899, France forced King Dong Khanh to hand over direct management rights to divide and rule the area and began implementing colonial policies.
On May 30, 1930, the area was divided into many cantons, including the provincial capital Buon Ma Thuot. After the Geneva Agreement in 1954, Vietnam was temporarily divided into two regions, the North and the South, the Saigon government divided the central region into the Central Highlands and the Central Plateau. It belongs to the Central Highlands.

In February 1976, the Vietnam Government issued a Decree to dissolve the region and merge the provinces in the South, including Dak Lak and the old Quang Duc. Currently, Dak Lak Province has one city, Buon Ma Thuot, one town, Buon Ho, and 13 districts.

Dak Lak Province is located in the center of the Central Highlands, serving as the source of the Serepok River system and part of the Ba River. It is situated 1,410 kilometers from Hanoi and 350 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City. The province borders Gia Lai to the north, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa to the east, Lam Dong and Dak Nong to the south, and Cambodia to the west.

Starting from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, head towards Saigon Bridge and follow Highway for approximately 17 kilometers. You'll encounter the Vung Tau intersection overpass; turn right and continue for another 5 kilometers to reach Vo Nguyen Giap Street. From there, proceed approximately 12 kilometers until you join National Highway 1 and make a right turn.

Travel along National Highway 1 for about 18 kilometers to Dau Giay intersection, then turn left onto National Highway 20. Continue on National Highway 20 for around 75 kilometers until you reach Lam Dong Province. Keep driving towards Lien Khuong airport for about 127 kilometers, then turn onto National Highway 27 to enter Dak Lak Province. From this point, continue another 85 kilometers to Buon Ma Thuot city.
On November 25, 2005, Gong Culture of Vietnam's Central Highlands was officially recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Following the Royal Court Music of Hue, Gong Culture of the Central Highlands is Vietnam's second intangible cultural heritage to be honored as a world heritage.
Gong Culture spans across five provinces: Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Lam Dong. It is an integral part of the lives of the ethnic communities in the Central Highlands. Central Highland people, used to express joy and sorrow in their everyday activities and labor.
