History of Battambang Historical Museum

According to the book "Battambang during the Time of the Lord Governor" by Tauch Chhuong, the building was constructed in 1905 by an Italian architect, under the governor of Battambang - Lord Chhum’s orders. During this time, Battambang was still under Siamese control and Lord Chhum’s family had ruled Battambang for generations.

After Battambang was ceded to France in 1907, Lord Chhum sold the building to French authorities and moved back to Thailand, ending his family’s reign in the province. The French then used the building as the workplace and residence of high-ranking French officials. During the Khmer Rouge regime, from April 1975 to January 1979, the building served as storage for staple food. Until 2005, it served the Battambang Provincial Hall.

The most exciting development was recently in 2023, when the Battambang Provincial Hall was converted into a museum and renamed the Battambang Historical Museum. The Battambang Historical Museum is now home to artifacts and artworks reflecting the province’s history.
