Bac Trach Church is located in Tien Hai District, Thai Binh Province, Vietnam. It’s about 23 kilometers east of Thai Binh City Center. If you start from Hanoi, the distance will be more than 125 kilometers and take you 3 hours to get to the Church.
From Hanoi, you can head National Highway 1A and then turn onto National Highway 38B to get to Tien Hai District. When reaching Tien Hai, better to ask locals for exact directions to save more time.

During the Le-Trinh dynasty, Father Francisco Te was sent to take care of the Ke Men parish and Bac Trach parish. In 1735, the first church was built with earthen walls and a thatched roof. In 1770, the church was rebuilt more solidly. With the process of development, the church built in 1770 was not enough to meet the religious needs, the church was rebuilt many times in the years: 1880, 1895, 1938.
The stone outside the church marks the day received the Decree of the Divine Mercy
In 2006, Father Augustine Nguyen Quang Huy and the Parish started the construction of the new church. The new church was inaugurated and consecrated, receiving the Decree of the Shrine of the Divine Mercy on April 27, 2014, presided over by Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli.
Bac Trach Church was built in the classical Gothic style and incorporates Greek architecture on both sides of the church. This creates a unique feature that stands out from the crowd of any church in Thai Binh.
Gothic architecture outside the Bac Trach Church
Bac Trach Church has a very large bell tower with up to 6 bells of different sizes, the heaviest bell is up to more than 3 tons. A grand clock with a diameter of four meters adorns the facade of the church.
With a length of up to 92 meters, a width of 45 meters, and a bell tower height of 60 meters, Bac Trach Church is considered one of the largest churches in Vietnam.
Inside the church, there are nearly 100 different statues and reliefs. Along with hundreds of stained glass windows that create an overwhelming atmosphere, not unlike being inside a cathedral in Europe. Along with that, the gold-lacquered columns create a truly magnificent scene.
Inside the church, the main color is golden
Surrounding the church are 14 Stations of the Cross depicting the Mercy of Jesus Christ. The rows of seats are arranged in straight lines for the congregation to attend Mass. Next to it is the sanctuary, where the priest presides over the ceremonies at a higher position so everyone can follow the Mass. On the sanctuary are also statues and altars of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ.
Looking straight up at the dome along the column, visitors will be amazed by the elaborately designed dome. The interior details are elaborately crafted. That's why many people compare Bac Trach to a "fairy tale castle" in real life.
